Huge drop in Shropshire social housing building

housing news decemberIn addition to those completed last year, 110 social rental homes were started in Telford & Wrekin and four in Shropshire.

It is a massive drop in Shropshire, where in 2010/11 258 were completed – more than in the last seven years combined.

In Telford, social rental building peaked in 1994/95, when 353 homes were completed, more than in the last four years combined.

Affordable housing plans given green light in Reading

New affordable homes are coming to Reading, but it’s not yet known how many.

Reading Borough Council’s planning committee liked the plans from Lochailort to knock down the old Reading Family Centre in North Street and replace it with 47 homes.

The authority has given permission for two separate plans on the site, one of which is 100 per cent affordable housing, which would be managed by the council or a housing association.

The other plan is 30 per cent affordable housing which amounts to 14 homes.

Grant of millions given to Watford Community housing for new social housing

housing news decemberWatford Community Housing has secured £3.3m grant from Homes England, a public body that funds affordable housing in the country, to help deliver social housing in Watford.

Watford Borough Council working in partnership with the association plans to deliver 55 new homes with the money given by the grant in 2019 – some of the homes will be in Bowmans Green and Woodmere Avenue.

Brexit gloom to hit housing market into 2019, says RICS

housing news decemberUncertainty and gloom about Brexit are likely to hit the UK housing market well into next year, surveyors believe.

The latest report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) predicts that the number of homes being sold – and their prices – will fall over the next three months.

Fewer people are interested in moving, and fewer want to sell.

Each home is already taking an average of four months to sell, the longest period since records began in 2016.

“It is evident from the feedback to the latest RICS survey that the ongoing uncertainties surrounding how the Brexit process plays out is taking its toll on the housing market,” said Simon Rubinsohn, RICS’ chief economist.
