Packing Tips for Moving House

Posted in: Moving Advice

Moving into a new house is a big job and packing is one of the things you definitely shouldn’t leave until the last minute. Packing up all your belongings gives you the chance to consider what you will need, what you want to get rid of, and what you want to put into storage. As packing and home removal experts, we thought we’d share our expert tips on packing for moving house because there are some tips and tricks that can make the moving process significantly easier!

Always Label Your Boxes

Cardboard boxLabelling is something that only takes a minute but can save you hours of rummaging through boxes in your new place. All you need to do to label boxes successfully is note which room the box belongs to and a rough list of the contents.

Labelling your moving boxes is one of the easiest ways to make sure your belongings end up in the right room. Here at Simply Removals, our expert movers benefit significantly from labelled boxes as it helps them complete their job efficiently.

Pack Important Items Together

One of the most important packing tips we can give you is to always pack important documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, and passports together. If you do this, it will be so much easier to keep them in a safe place. This prevents the likelihood of lost documents and helps ensure you don’t find yourself applying for a passport replacement after you move in.

Top tip: keep all your important documents with you in an essentials box to avoid misplacing anything while you travel between properties.

Prioritise Packing an Essentials Box

Passport, watch, money, and a diaryWhen it comes to packing efficiently, we always recommend that the best thing you can do is pack an essentials box. This is a clearly labelled box that is full of all the things you’ll need to resume normal life right away. So, examples of these items would be things such as phone chargers, toothbrushes, clean clothes, and loo roll. Packing an essentials box is a significant time saver.

How to Pack Heavy Items

Packing heavy items is often something people worry about. However, there is no need to feel stressed or overwhelmed at the thought of safely packing heavy items. Our advice would be to pack all heavy items at the bottom of boxes. If there are some items that are too heavy or too big to fit in cardboard moving boxes, try wrapping them up in bubble wrap so they are protected but can be easily transported.

Top tip: always store heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes on top to ensure no breakable items are crushed during your home move.

How to Pack Cables

However, our packing experts suggest using used toilet rolls to transport cables easily. Just be sure to label each toilet roll to help identify the cables from each other.

Pack Your Clothes Easily

Packing your clothes easily and efficiently may seem like a difficult job but it doesn’t have to be. Rather than removing every clothing from its hanger, slide clothes and hangers directly into rubbish bags, put a hole in the bag to pull the hangers through, and then tie together with string. This simple technique prevents your clothes and hangers from coming apart in transport and is far more efficient and time-saving than removing items from hangers, folding, and boxing!

Pack Fragile Items with Care

One of the easiest ways to pack your fragile items easily and transport them safely is to remove all the drawers from your furniture and pack the fragile items amongst your clothes. Once you’ve carefully wrapped all your fragile items, secure the drawers by covering your furniture with cling film or furniture wrap.

How to Pack Your Plates

One of the rooms in your home that takes the longest to pack is, without a doubt, the kitchen. However, to make things easier and prevent any breakages, we thought we’d share how to pack your plates effectively. Do not stack plates so that they are flat on top of each other as this can put a lot of pressure on the bottom plate, often leading to breakages. Instead, wrap each plate individually in bubble wrap or newspaper and store them vertically. This will help ensure your plates get to your new home in one piece.
